So just jump up one more time to make sure. But wait! Sometimes there will be an invisiblock on top of the original one. Chances are you’ll hit it, and the block will laugh at you, but you have beaten it. So shimmy yourself to the edge and jump straight up. If it looks like a long jump, chances are the troll wants to draw your eye toward that leap and not at the obvious space where he’s placed his invisiblock.
You dash toward the ledge and leap…only to smash your head into an invisible block (usually accompanied by that dreadful laughter sound effect) and plummet down the pit to your death.Īn easy way to overcome this is to approach nearly every jump with caution. You notice you have to jump over a gap and, fool that you are, think you have a nice clear path to the other side. So you’ve held select down, didn’t notice anything too far out of the ordinary, and decide to give the level a go. Always be on the lookout for troll-blocks If you are getting a lot of bad courses, sometimes it’s good to just take a break and calm down if you’re too frustrated then you’ll even have trouble with courses that actually can be beaten within 3 lives.Ĥ. This mode will literally steal lives from you so to make up for that you want as good a head start as possible. As a general rule, if I can’t complete at least two levels within my first ten lives, I’m starting over. An easy way to do this is to collect those coins or use Koopa shells to blast through lines of enemies (sometimes star power is available).Įxpert is all about momentum. If you die three times in one level, you may get lucky with the next one and beat it on your first shot (yes, this is possible on expert, just don’t expect any auto-levels), hopefully after having collected all three lives that you previously lost. I usually give myself three tries per level as that is as many extra lives as you can get. This is just as vital as skipping levels. Try to get all three 1-ups in a level when possible. And don’t let the fact that you’re skipping a lot hurt your ego: lives are at an upmost premium in this mode. Simple right? If you find any of these above, chances are this is a level that will take more than three attempts (more on this coming up) and thus not worth your time, so keep the select button held down and skip it. Cannons behind you (the ‘bullet bill’ ones), as they most likely will be shooting a trampoline that rockets you into the inevitable gap ahead (or an enemy, or a spike-ball).When it does, the level pauses and you begin a countdown of three seconds, allowing you ample time to check for the following things: In order to prevent this from happening, all one has to do is hold down the ‘minus’ key (‘select’ for us old-schoolers) at the title screen and don’t let go until the level loads up. The level loads, and before you can properly acclimate yourself you are being smashed from above by a (typically) giant Thwomp block. You load up level 1/16, read the title of the level for any warning signs (‘hard lvl’ ‘impossible…’ ‘invisiblocks…’), and proceed. You’ve seen it once you’ve seen it a thousand times: you boot up Expert mode and after the obligatory Peach kidnapping you are faced with the daunting road of 16 of the most trollish courses in Mario history. Let’s hit the start button, shall we? They be trolling…
How can this be? The most difficult mode in the game doesn’t have a guide? Thus I have compiled what I think are the most useful tips to hopefully give you some help in successfully completing this mode (and you’ll have to, around 25 times, in order to get all 100 amiibo costumes). This mode had me furious and I desperately sought for some sort of guide with a collection of tips for each mode, but alas I found none. This mode, from what I’ve gleaned from games forums far and wide, is near-universally derided as the so-called ‘expert’ levels are simply poorly designed messes with invisible blocks seemingly at the end of every jump. I’ve had this game since release and have already put over a hundred hours into it and feel I can safely impart upon you fellow adventurers my wisdom regarding arguably the most controversial mode in the game: the 100-Mario Expert challenge. While I continue work on the What If feature, I thought I’d bring another entry to you based on my current gaming addiction: Super Mario Maker.
